LONDON – The BBC has officially announced the full cast for Wahala, an upcoming six-part psychological thriller adapted by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko. The series, produced by Firebird Pictures (part of BBC Studios), is set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Based on Nikki May’s widely acclaimed debut novel of the same name, Wahala follows three Nigerian-British women whose lifelong friendship is pushed to the brink as dark secrets and dangerous pasts surface across London and beyond. The title, drawn from Nigerian Pidgin, translates to “trouble” — a fitting promise for the tense, addictive drama.
A Powerhouse Cast Led by British and Nigerian Talent
The series boasts an exceptional ensemble:
- Adelayo Adedayo (The Responder, Supacell) as Simi
- Cush Jumbo (Criminal Record, The Good Wife) as Boo
- Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes, Cheaters) as Ronke
The tight-knit trio’s world is shaken by the arrival of a charismatic newcomer, Isobel, played by Deborah Ayorinde (Them, Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue).
In a major career move, Nigerian screen icon Genevieve Nnaji joins the cast in a pivotal role. The Lionheart star returns to acting after an eight-year hiatus, marking one of the most anticipated TV castings of the year.
Top-Tier Creative Team Behind the Thriller
Theresa Ikoko, known for her BAFTA-nominated work on the acclaimed film Rocks, not only writes the series but also serves as an executive producer and director. She is joined by directors Leonora Lonsdale and Remi Weekes (BAFTA-nominated for His House). Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto produces.
Executive producers include Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC, alongside Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Craig Holleworth, and Theresa Ikoko for Firebird Pictures.
Global Reach and Release Window
BBC Studios will handle global sales, ensuring Wahala reaches international audiences. As of May 2026, filming is underway, though the BBC has yet to confirm an official premiere date. Fans can expect the six-part thriller to land on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year or in early 2027.
With its blend of Nollywood star power, British dramatic talent, and a sharp, modern adaptation of a beloved novel, Wahala is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about thriller series of the coming season.
