Adire brings afore the hailing state of human society, affected by struggles for freedom –a quest that comes in different shades and shapes. The 2023 Nollywood film, Adire explores the idea of man’s pursuit for personal liberation, vices, religiosity and hypocrisy. Adire opens up the rotten side of human life and compels the audience to reflect on the essence of freedom and communal living.
A prevalent theme in Adire is reflected in the dialogues. It exposes the moral quandary surrounding vices and the stereotypical, hypocritical perspectives on self-esteem — which leads to degradation for a prostitute on self-discovery and liberation, battle for social acceptance.
This theme is projected in Adire’s encounter with Tobi at the bar, Adire’s attempt at sexual escapade with Thomas, the pastor’s wife’s confrontations with Adire and ultimately, the pimp’s comeback. All of these unveil the prostitution market and who truly owns who. It prompts questions such as; is condemnation valid? whose condemnation is more valid and who exactly is in need of redemption? The prostitute seeking new life? The society? The church or the pimp?

Storyline
The narrative revolves round Asari, whose escape to freedom is fuelled by years of prostitution under a notorious pimp, Captain. In a flashback, the genesis of her prostitution journey is revealed through a nightmare. But in the present, she flees and starts a new beginning in the old Oyo Town.
The position of an assumed “first lady” in a sex work establishment in Lagos doesn’t offer her the satisfaction she needs. Asari’s determination to break free leads her to declare upon her arrival in Oyo town that it is better to be “a wounded bird in the bush” than “a pet in the cage.”
Notably, she adopts the name “Adire” to symbolize her journey towards freedom and her adeptness in making Adire lingerie for women. Her resilience in facing new challenges in her newfound environment shows her determination to retain her freedom regardless of the ‘rumour-as-it’.
Adire explores the essence of Christianity, questioning the church’s failure to fulfil its promise of love and salvation. Folasade, the pastor’s wife, embodies rigid adherence to rules rather than compassion preached by the church, leaving members to conceal their true selves behind masks of conformity.
Adire’s arrival disrupts this façade, as her compassionate actions extend the spirit of freedom to women like Selawa, the saintly deaconess, among others. This unexpected source of guidance challenges conventional norms and rules. It sets out to demonstrate that wisdom and inspiration sometimes lurk in unexpected places. Ironically, what is presented redefines social and religious conformity in that a former prostitute teaches Christians the true meaning of love.
Additionally, Tunde’s erratic action depicts how indoctrination acquired under self-righteous lifestyle is a threat to human society. Though with no much evidence of tutoring other than his consistence presence with his mother at every meeting, Adire strives to show the danger of extreme religiosity and effect of being brainwashed by wrong ideals.

The Loopholes
While the director skilfully portrays the theme of repentance in a fresh light, incorporating fitting music and memorable characters, there are some missed opportunities. The film could have explored Adire’s (Asari) Adire undergarment production as a significant source of empowerment and financial independence for herself and others and not just a tool to keep their men under control.
Also, Tunde’s self-righteous indignation and zealousness in revenge on God’s behalf, asserting that “our God is a consuming fire” leads to arson — an inflated characterization that doesn’t justly represent the Christian religion and society Tunde is raised. In addition, a more detailed exposition of Adire’s (Asari’s) past, rather than relying solely on a vague nightmare revelation, could have added depth to her character arc.

Characterization and Cast
Directed by Adeoluwa Owu and written by Jack’enneth Opukeme, Adire actors bring life and their known professional personalities to the movie; exceptional performances in which each character embodies their roles.
The cast includes: Kehinde Bankole (Adire), Funlola Aofiyebi (Folashade) Femi Branch (Mide), Yvonne, Jegede (Shalewa), Mike Afolarin (Deji), Yemi Blaq (Captain) Ibrahim Chatta (Tega), Ifeanyi Kalu (Thomas), Onyinye Odokoro (Abeni), Damilola Ogunsi (Ope), Kelechi Udegbe( Tobi), Tomi Ojo (Simi) and Jack’enneth Opukeme (Tunde).
Setting and Embellishment
Set in Oyo Town, “Adire” captures the essence of the old Yoruba environment through cinematography, evoking the ambiance of the church, local scenery, bars, and Adire’s flat. The old Yoruba songs that accompany certain scenes and actions notably enhance the audience’s cinematic experience.
Conclusively, Adire kills two birds with a stone; apart from being a socio-cultural cinematic production, it also promotes and showcases the traditional Nigerian popular fabric, presenting a novel and ingenious way to profit from it. Adire is definitely a must-watch for everyone, especially those in dire need of freedom and self-discovery.
