In a report from Variety Magazine, Elba is collaborating with David Oyelowo to bring this iconic story to the screen, signaling a significant commitment to adapting one of Africa’s most important literary works.
Chinua Achebe, who was born on November 16, 1930, and passed away on March 21, 2013, is celebrated as a pivotal figure in modern African literature. His 1958 novel “Things Fall Apart” remains the most widely studied and translated African novel, having been published in over 60 languages. The book has received numerous accolades, including the Nigerian National Merit Award and the Man Booker International Prize, and it is the first installment of Achebe’s African Trilogy, followed by No Longer at Ease and Arrow of God. The novel has seen previous adaptations, including a notable miniseries featuring Pete Edochie as the protagonist, Okonkwo.
While a writer has yet to be announced for this adaptation, Elba will produce the series alongside Gina Carter through their newly established 22Summers production company. Other executive producers include Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka from Yoruba Saxon, as well as Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks. The project will be under the A24 banner, known for its distinctive and compelling storytelling.
The official logline for Things Fall Apart describes the narrative as focusing on Okonkwo, portrayed by Elba, a formidable African warrior and leader whose life is disrupted by British colonialism. The series aims to explore Okonkwo’s struggle to uphold his power and traditions amidst overwhelming changes, showcasing the complex interplay between strength, vulnerability, and adaptability.
