Ghanaian cinema celebrated a landmark moment with the world premiere of The Fisherman at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. Produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie of Luu Vision Media and directed by Zoey Martinson, the film captivated audiences with a compelling story drawn from Ghana’s coastal heritage. As Ghana’s first official selection at this prestigious festival, The Fisherman received standing ovations and left a memorable impression on a sold-out crowd.
Though screened out of competition, The Fisherman garnered international acclaim by winning the Fellini Medal, awarded by UNESCO’s International Council for Film, Television, and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT) as part of the Enrico Fulchignoni Prize. This award, now in its 36th year, honours films that embody UNESCO’s ideals of peace and tolerance, highlighting the film’s cultural significance and dedication to themes of resilience, community, and Ghanaian coastal livelihoods.
Martinson’s film brings together an impressive cast of emerging Ghanaian talents, including Ricky Adeleyitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi, with a performance by Nigerian actor Dulo Harris. Veteran actors Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, and Dorothy Konadu further enrich the production, which authentically represents Ghana’s vibrant storytelling. The artistic vision is realized by a skilled crew, with cinematography by Adam Carboni, costumes by Gifty Mawuena Sossavi, and production design by Douglas Baiden, alongside a moving score by Avi Amon and visual effects by Nurudeen Tahiru and Daria Amai Shelton.
Produced by Luu Vision Media in collaboration with Owusu-Afriyie, King Luu, and Korey Jackson, The Fisherman is now seeking global distribution. Audiences can stay updated on the film’s journey through its Instagram page, The Fisherman Film.
