The 10th Mashariki African Film Festival (MAAFF) in Kigali has launched with an inspiring opening, marked by the premiere of After the Long Rains (Baada ya Masika), a film directed and produced by Damien Hauser. Distributed by Rushlake Media GmbH, the film captivated the festival audience with its heartfelt storytelling and powerful themes, setting a strong tone for the week-long celebration of African cinema.
After the Long Rains unfolds in the scenic yet challenging landscapes of East Africa, telling the story of Aisha, an eleven-year-old girl with dreams of becoming an actress in Europe. A school assignment sparks Aisha’s vision for her future, a future that contrasts with the expectations of her rural community, where children often inherit family trades. While her classmates accept this tradition, Aisha is determined to forge her own path.

Aisha’s journey is fraught with societal and familial skepticism, especially from her mother, who sees fishing as a male-only trade. However, with guidance from a local fisherman named Hassan, who faces his own personal struggles with addiction, Aisha learns the skills and resilience needed to pursue her aspirations. Her story highlights both the strength of her ambition and the complexities of challenging traditional gender roles within her community.
This year’s MAAFF serves as a vibrant platform for African filmmakers and storytellers to connect and celebrate diverse narratives that reflect the continent’s richness and complexity. The festival not only honours African cinematic achievements but also fosters collaboration and creativity, empowering filmmakers to share stories that resonate across cultures and generations.
