The European Union (EU), in partnership with the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival, is set to launch the EU Short Film Competition and Filmmaking Impact Lab, offering an exciting opportunity for emerging filmmakers. This initiative seeks to deepen participants’ understanding of contemporary film techniques and industry trends, while also encouraging creative storytelling that addresses pressing social issues. Both events promise to enrich the Nigerian film landscape, bringing together talent from across the region.
The short film competition invites filmmakers to submit works between 1 to 3 minutes in length, showcasing their narrative skills and unique perspectives. Participants will have the chance to explore themes relevant to today’s society, using the power of film to make an impact. The competition is open to all emerging filmmakers looking to push creative boundaries and gain exposure to an international audience.

In addition, the Filmmaking Impact Lab will offer a masterclass aimed at filmmakers interested in socially conscious projects. Through the lab, participants can learn the essentials of impact filmmaking, from concept development to effective storytelling that resonates with audiences. As an added incentive, emerging filmmakers who submit a synopsis for a short documentary will be eligible to compete for a documentary grant designed to support socially impactful projects.

The winners of the competition and documentary grant will be announced following the screening of six selected entries at the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival, scheduled for November 27-30, 2024. Each winner will receive a cash prize of one million naira, sponsored by the EU, recognizing their creative achievements and commitment to social change. Full application details are available through the festival’s official platform.
