The second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit (ACS) kicks off today at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra, Ghana. Running from October 7 to October 10, this year’s summit is centered around the theme, “Is Cinema Relevant in African Communities?” The event aims to explore the significance of cinema in addressing societal issues and fostering cultural connections within African communities.
Prominent British actor Idris Elba, who chairs the IE7&The Akuna Group, is set to headline the summit, with King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, serving as the Guest of Honour on October 8. The event will also see participation from representatives of various African countries, including Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Angola, alongside executives from the African diaspora and key investment bodies such as Afreximbank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
During the summit’s launch in June, Juliet Asante, the CEO of the National Film Authority (NFA), emphasized Africa’s cinematic potential, which remains largely untapped. The ACS aims to address this challenge by promoting collaboration and innovation in the African cinema sector, ultimately driving sustainable growth and showcasing the continent’s rich storytelling heritage.
