The 14th Luxor African Film Festival, held from January 9-14 in Luxor, Egypt, concluded with the Special Jury Prize awarded to the feature film Frantz Fanon, directed by Algerian filmmaker Abdenour Zahzah. This recognition highlights the film’s powerful portrayal of the life and activism of Frantz Fanon, a Martiniquais psychiatrist and anti-colonial figure.

The 90-minute film, released in 2024, competed alongside ten other films from various African nations, including Egypt, Tunisia, Senegal, Togo, and Cameroon, capturing the attention of the festival organizers.

Frantz Fanon explores the harsh inequalities and discriminatory practices faced by Muslim Algerian patients at the Blida-Joinville psychiatric hospital between 1953 and 1956, during French colonization. The film delves into Fanon’s personal experiences, which spurred his involvement in the Algerian independence movement.

A blend of autobiographical fiction and documentary, the film was written by Zahzah and features both Algerian and international actors. French-Haitian actor Alexandre Desane portrays the lead role of Fanon, bringing the psychiatrist’s complex character to life.

The film premiered in October 2024 in Algiers and was also showcased at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Arts and the National Center for Cinema Development, the production is currently screening in cinemas across Algeria.

The festival’s recognition of the film emphasizes the importance of international exposure for Algerian cinema, known for its artistry and high standards. Zouhir Ballalou, the Minister of Culture and Arts, congratulated Zahzah and his team, underscoring the value of such film competitions in promoting Algerian filmmaking.

The 14th Luxor African Film Festival, named after Egyptian actor Nour El-Sherif, featured 65 films from 35 African countries, fostering cooperation and co-production across the continent.
