Go! revolves around a gifted teenage athlete in a South African suburb who reigns as the local champion. Created in four episodes, the story chronicles the challenges that tie teenage lives in a web of betrayal, love, community, family, brotherhood, and opportunity. The series presents a stark contrast in the living conditions of South African society, reflecting how adulthood is shaped by mistakes, opportunities, and support. It vividly portrays human disposition toward loyalty, love, and crime.
Storyline
Siya, nicknamed Bolt, is a naturally gifted teenager, loved by many in his community, with unwavering support from his mother, close friends Nthabi and Mandla, and his older brother Shuffle, who helps him arrange local competitions to make money. The harsh realities of the suburb catch up with him when a group of boys he previously defeated in a race attacks him. Struggling with poverty and crime, Siya and his family find themselves in increasingly difficult circumstances.
Coach Arendse discovers Siya and offers him a scholarship to Saint Jude, a prestigious school for the wealthy. On the eve of his resumption, a tragic accident occurs—due to the reckless interference of his drunken friend, Siya accidentally hits a teenage boy. Fearing the consequences, he takes his brother’s advice and flees, remembering his father’s last words before his death: Go!
At Saint Jude, Siya’s running talent is exploited under the guise of a scholarship. When he learns that his accident victim survived, he frames his friend for the crime, unaware that the family funding his scholarship is that of the boy he thought he had killed. As secrets pile up, Siya juggles school life, a romance with the Khumalos’ daughter, and his growing success—all while struggling with guilt and instability at home. His world comes crashing down when he loses the SA scout running opportunity, Mandla discovers he was framed, and his girlfriend turns away from him. Go! ends on a suspenseful note, leaving the audience wondering—will Siya escape guilt and justice? Will he achieve his dreams amid all the chaos? These questions set the stage for an anticipated second season.
Cast and Characterization
Directed by Tristan Holmes and created by Kutlwano Ditsele and Thuli Zuma, Go! features a talented cast that embodies their characters with remarkable depth and authenticity. Thandolwethu Zondi, Wonder Ndlovu, Shalate Sekhabi, Wiseman Mncube, Brendon Daniels, Dawn Thandeka King, Mamodibe Ramodibe, Ntobeko Sishi, Daanyaal Ally, and Aidia De Meyer deliver strong performances, bringing their roles to life in a way that resonates with the audience.
Blind Spots and Loopholes
While Go! follows a familiar storyline, its uniqueness lies in its cultural authenticity. The series effectively highlights issues such as apartheid’s lingering effects, crime, survival, family, and brotherhood. However, a notable inconsistency lies in the lip-syncing of the South African dialogue to English, which disrupts the viewing experience. Nevertheless, its representation of modern South African life remains compelling. Despite the predictability of some plot points, Go! builds suspense effectively and ends on a high note, leaving viewers eager for the next season.
Setting/ Props and Costumes
Set in two contrasting worlds; one marked by affluence and the other by economic struggle; Go! accurately portrays the social divide through its locations, props, costumes, and effects. The gritty realism of the suburb is convincingly depicted without exaggeration, making the scenes believable. The stark economic disparities in education, employment, and housing provide a strong backdrop for each character’s narrative.

Cinematography
The cinematography of Go! is distinct, with an unstable, fast-paced camera style that rapidly shifts between frames. While this technique might be intended to reflect the chaotic nature of life in Johannesburg’s suburbs, it can feel disorienting for some viewers. Nevertheless, the camera work is purposeful and aligns with the story’s energetic pace.
Dialogue and Language
Though the dialogues are translated into English, inconsistencies between speech and action reveal that Go! was originally produced in a different language. Despite this, the dialogue effectively conveys the film’s themes and emotions, allowing audiences to connect with the story.
Go! is a compelling coming-of-age drama that blends sports, crime, and personal struggle into a gripping narrative. Its exploration of loyalty, ambition, and survival makes it a standout in South African storytelling. While it has minor inconsistencies in translation and predictability, its authenticity and strong performances keep viewers engaged. With an intense cliffhanger, the first season leaves audiences eagerly awaiting what happens next in Siya’s turbulent journey.
