Idris Elba Unveils Vision to Revolutionize Africa’s Entertainment Industry

Elba aims to develop an end-to-end ecosystem for African creatives

Idris Elba has set his sights on transforming Africa’s entertainment industry, unveiling a bold vision at SXSW London to establish a continent-wide cinema network. Acknowledging the lack of infrastructure, Elba highlighted the severe shortage of movie theatres across Africa, where fewer than 3,000 screens serve over a billion people. His ambition, as he described it, is to build “the African Odeon,” bringing the magic of cinema to new audiences and closing the gap in theatrical exhibition.

His dream, however, goes far beyond brick-and-mortar theatres. Elba aims to develop an end-to-end ecosystem for African creatives, supporting them from content creation to distribution. By integrating data and digital tools, he hopes to make a compelling case for global investors and studios to back African stories. For him, it’s not just about showing films but creating a sustainable industry where local talent can thrive.

At the heart of this initiative is the Akuna Wallet, a blockchain-powered platform tailored to address financial challenges in the creative sector. Named after Elba’s middle name, the wallet is designed to simplify cross-border transactions, making it easier for African artists and producers to access funding and distribute revenue. This innovation is critical in overcoming logistical and financial barriers that have long hindered creative growth on the continent.

Currently in a testing phase within Ghana’s regulatory sandbox, the Akuna Wallet is being positioned as a game-changer. Its managing director, Kwadwo Owusu-Agyeman, emphasized that the infrastructure being developed isn’t just for music or film but for all creative sectors. By addressing core issues like rights management and distribution, Elba’s initiative could lay the foundation for a more vibrant, interconnected African creative economy.
