    Lobola Man Movie Review

    ReviewerAFR

Lobola, also known as “bride price”, is a traditional custom in many Southern African cultures where the groom or his family pays the bride’s family in exchange for her hand in marriage. This payment can take various forms, including cattle, money, or other valuable goods. Lobola serves several purposes, such as compensating the bride’s family for the loss of her labour and contribution, strengthening ties between the two families, and demonstrating the groom’s commitment and ability to support his future wife. In some cases, the Lobola can be negotiated, depending on the capacity of the groom or the status of the bride, as seen in the movie, Lobola Man. The practice varies widely among different communities, with specific customs and expectations differing from one region to another.

    Storyline

The storyline of the movie Lobola Man centres on two different adults but webbed together. One is a Lobola Man, a person who negotiates on behalf of a family to reduce the bride price of the woman the groom is trying to marry. This popular negotiator, named Ace Ngubeni, is regularly hired for his services. However, Ace doesn’t believe in love or committed relationships. He meets a lady he seeks to pursue.

Ironically, Ace helps others form committed relationships by negotiating or faking lobola arrangements. His main task is to reduce the bride price by appealing to the bride’s family. Duke wants to marry Zandile, a lady from a wealthy family who bosses him and leave him jittery most times. Duke is not proud of his family, and also scared of his father- in-law to be, so he hires Ace to pretend to be a family member and ensure the lobola negotiation goes through. Ace meets Zandile who happens to be the same lady he is interested in. He struggles between being professional or being a playboy.

Duke’s plan starts to unravel when Zandile’s father insists they join him on a fishing trip, despite Duke’s seasickness nature. Meanwhile, Ace enjoys himself and forms a bond with Zandile, recognizing his chance. The plot thickens as Zandile’s friend reveals Ace’s true identity, disrupting the arrangement. Duke seeks love elsewhere while Ace, now in love with Zandile, realizes his mistakes and confronts his past, including the unhealthy influence of his father. Will Zandile forgive and accept him?
