The East African film industry has reached a significant milestone with the release of The Christmas Run, the region’s first-ever Christmas-themed romantic comedy. Produced by Tanzania’s Black Unicorn Studios in collaboration with Kenya’s Africa Post Office (APO), the film reflects the growing partnership between the two nations in the creative sector. This landmark production showcases the region’s potential to create compelling content that resonates with local and international audiences.
The Christmas Run originated from Black Unicorn Studios’ Made in Africa writing competition, co-founded by Tanzanian sisters Angela and Alinda Ruhinda. The competition aimed to highlight local talent and stories that reflect East African experiences. Stephen Charles, the winner, crafted a narrative that combines humour, romance, and an important exploration of mental health awareness, ensuring the film offers both entertainment and a meaningful message.
Kenyan director Enos Olik brought the screenplay to life, working with an exceptional cast and crew from Kenya and Tanzania. The film stars a mix of debut actors, such as Talie Gray and Noel Magoti, alongside established Kenyan talents, including Sarah Hassan and Fareed Khimani. The collaboration between seasoned professionals and emerging actors underscores the region’s dedication to nurturing talent and creating memorable cinematic experiences.
Kenya also played a vital role in the film’s post-production, which was handled by Nairobi-based Africa Post Office (APO). Renowned for its cutting-edge expertise in visual effects and editing, APO polished the film to meet international standards. This collaboration highlights the technical capabilities within East Africa and emphasizes the benefits of cross-border partnerships in elevating regional cinema.

Shot in both English and Swahili, The Christmas Run is a vibrant celebration of East African culture. The film explores universal themes of love, family, and friendship while celebrating the shared heritage of the region. Producers hope this groundbreaking collaboration will inspire future co-productions, fostering deeper connections within the East African creative industry and solidifying its position on the global stage.
