UNESCO has launched a call for not-for-profit organizations and institutions legally registered and operating in Africa to design and implement a film residency for young women filmmakers. The initiative, open until April 6, 2025, seeks a partner to manage a four-week residency program that will support ten emerging African women filmmakers in enhancing their creative, technical, and professional skills. Eligible applicants must have been legally registered for at least five years and can include NGOs, research institutes, universities, foundations, professional associations, and intergovernmental organizations.
The selected partner will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the residency, including logistics, coordination, and implementation, as well as monitoring and communication throughout the program. Additionally, post-residency follow-ups will be required to ensure continued professional development for participants.
The residency aims to address gender disparities in the African film industry by fostering inclusive storytelling and providing participants with industry connections. As part of the program, ten short films will be developed to showcase the unique perspectives of the filmmakers.
This initiative is funded by an Additional Contribution from the People’s Republic of China to UNESCO and aligns with the capacity-building recommendations in UNESCO’s report, The African Film Industry: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities for Growth. It follows the successful UNESCO-Nara Film Residency for young African women filmmakers. Further details and application procedures can be found at this link.
